Shop 'till you drop is a tour you can book in many big cities all over the world, but most of them don't even mention Jakarta. But Jakarta has a lot to offer for those who are just shopping crazy. The malls are big, very big and the prices are much lower than you could probably imagine! Below is a list of the biggest and best malls of Jakarta. You will find much more of them if you want to, each mall has it's own atmosphere.
Mal Ciputra - earlier named Citraland Mall - is a shopping center in Grogol in West Jakarta. The mall was built in and opened officially in 1993. On top of the mall is Hotel Ciputra. The building is owned by Grup Ciputra, which is a branch of PT. Ciputra Property Tbk. The mall is located at a large intersection in West Jakarta and close to the inner-city toll road.
The mall is also located close to three well-known universities in the city: Universitas Trisakti, Universitas Tarumanagara dan Universitas Krida Wacana. The mall itself is of mixed use and has six floors that have a combined space of some 76.000 square meters, not including parking space. The mall itself has one main corridor with a ramp, so visitors can simply walk around to visit all parts of the mall.
Roughly 12 million visitors visit the mall each year. The main tenants of the building are Matahari department store, Gramedia bookstore, Toko Gunung Agung bookstore, '21' cinema, Hero Supermarket, Gold's Gym, McDonald's, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and KFC. The mall is often the place where national or international records are broken, or at least an effort to do so is being made.
