November 2009 - A cremation on Bali is one of the most important symbols in the ceremonial life on the island. Death is not seen as the end, but as the start of a new life. Everything will be done to give this new life the best start possible. This set of pictures is taken in Ubud, the cultural heart of the resort island of Bali in Indonesia.

July 2009 - Earlier this year the OSA Goliath, built for Coastline Maritime by Drydocks World Pertama on the Indonesian island of Batam, was delivered. Earlier on, late 2008, I had the chance to bring a visit to this shipyard and have a look around on the then half-finished ship. With a dimension of 180x32x12 meters and a weight of 22,000 tonnes the vessel is undoubtedly the world's largest vessel in its class built so far and the largest ship ever built in Indonesia.

April 2009 - Batam, at just a stones throw from the wealthy city-state of Singapore, has undergone tremendous growth just because of it's close proximity to that Singapore. Companies opened businesses on the island and the infrastructure was face-lifted. But the current Batam is in no way any match for Singapore because of a number of reasons. One of them, of course, is corruption.

January 2009 - During a short trip by electrical train from station Pondok Ranji in the southern suburbs of Jakarta to Tanah Abang somewhere in the center of the megapole, there is much to see in the train and in the direct vicinity of the two iron beams that carry the train through the urban jungle. This is a set of pictures made during Imlek, Chinese New Year. It was fairly quiet in the trains and on the stations.

16 December 2008 - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was in Yogyakarta just for a short period. But as usual a President does not travel somewhere if he doesn't have his agenda filled. Coming from eastern Java yesterday, he traveled to the Prambanan temple in the morning while in the afternoon he officially opened Taman Pintar. His evening is probably filled with a dinner with the sultan and governor of Yogyakarta province, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, which could well be a next President as well.
