About this picture
15 May 2006 - Molten lava streams from the lava dome Sunday. Once the lava dome collapses, there can be weeks or months of pyroclastic flows, says Michael Ramsey, a geology professor at the University of Pittsburgh. A pyroclastic flow is an avalanche of volcanic ash, pumice, rock fragments and hot gas that can move at hundreds of miles per hour down the mountainside.
