spacer 01 January 2006 - As snow floated down from the dark skies over Finland's capital Helsinki, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and exiled leaders of the Free Aceh Movement held a historic meeting aimed at building a long-lasting peace in Aceh. Kalla met for the first time with GAM leaders Malik Mahmud and Zaini Abdullah here Friday evening.

01 January 2006 - Transport problems have delayed until early next week the withdrawal of Indonesia's last police reinforcements from Aceh, the final stage in a pullout of tens of thousands of soldiers and police under a landmark peace deal, police said. The contingent, which had been due to leave on Saturday, was likely to leave on Monday because of problems getting a vessel to ship them home.

02 November 2005 - An official of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) exiled leadership arrived in Indonesia's Aceh province on Monday after a 25-year absence to see the peace process aimed at ending nearly three decades of conflict. The Stockholm-based GAM and Indonesia's government were pushed back to negotiations partly by the Dec. 26 tsunami.

17 October 2005 - The military will begin withdrawing 6,000 more soldiers from Aceh this week under the second phase of a landmark peace pact, a spokesman said. Erie Soetiko said 650 troops would leave the province tomorrow, the same day the armed forces expect former rebels of GAM to complete the second phase of its weapons handover.

16 September 2005 - Dozens of rebels from GAM, came to the regional capital of Banda Aceh Thursday to hand in a total of 78 weapons to international monitors from the E.U. and Asian nations. Scores of GAM fighters rode onto a football field, and watched under the scorching sun, as their leaders handed over weapon after weapon to members of the Aceh Monitoring Mission.
