The new 1.000 Rupiah coin launched on July 1, 2010 is a single metal coin slightly smaller than the 500 Rupiah aluminium coin, but heavier. The front side of the coin features the 'Garuda Pancasila' and the nominal value, while on the back side the traditional angklung music instrument is depicted in front of the Gedung Sate government building, built in the colonial time.
These coins will be valid tender alongside the already existing 1.000 Rupiah notes, because there always is a shortage of small denominations in Indonesia. Hopefully these coins will last longer than their paper friends.
Rp. 1.000 coin, front and back
