Provinces of Indonesia

The province (provinsi or propinsi) is the highest tier of local government subnational entity in Indonesia. Each province has its own local government (Pemerintah Daerah Provinsi), headed by the governor (gubernur); and has its own legislative body (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah). The Governor and member of representatives are elected by popular vote for 5 years term.

Gorontalo is a province of Indonesia. It is on the island of Sulawesi, and borders Central Sulawesi and North Sulawesi provinces. Gorontalo was split off from North Sulawesi in December 2000. The capital is Gorontalo City.

Administrative divisions

As of 2004, the province is administratively divided into four regencies (kabupaten) and one city (kota):
  • Boalemo Regency
  • Bone Bolango Regency
  • Gorontalo Regency
  • Pohuwato Regency
  • Gorontalo City


The area of Gorontalo Province is about 12,215 kmē with the total population in 2004 about 887,000 people.
