Pulau Sanghiang, a small mysterious island in Selat Sunda, partly consisting of jungle ( 7 sq.km. ), surrounded by mangrove forests and white beaches. The island is also surrounded by coral reefs. Other parts of the island are muddy and musquito infested. But the small idyllic bays along the eastern side will you soon let forget the unhospitable and swamps. The coral reefs off the coast, complete with old wreck, are a paradise for snorkling-lovers. Watch out for stonefish and squids. You can camp on the beaches in the southeast if you want to.
Bring along enough water, anti-musquito and sunscreen. When you stay longer, you will need a decent amount of food as well. Make a good deal with the shipper or fisher which brings you to the island, he has to pick you up as well.
In the Second World War the Japanese have built a fortress on a cliff which is now entirely overgrown. Because the Japanese had to leave the island in a hurry after their capitulation, there soon were stories about lost treasures. Until1980, travellers secretly travelled to the island in the hope to get rich. The disappearance of three of the four cannons is to be named mysterious. In 1985, the government declared the island National Reserve, but that didn't prohibit the construction of tourist resorts on the island, beginning in 1986. Back then, the government told that they could not be used. It's the question whether the island can maintain it's historical treasures.
You can reach the island by boat from Anyer. A boat leaves these if you are lucky. The trip takes about 1,5 hours, and is not very cheap, but if you are very lucky, you will even see dolphins.
