Jakarta (DKI Jakarta) is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Located on the northwest coast of Java, it has an area of 661 square kilometers and a population of 8,490,000. Jakarta is the country's economic, cultural and political center. It is the most populous city in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and is the twelfth-largest city in the world. The metropolitan area, Jabodetabek, is the second largest in the world.
The Barack Obama statue has soon become a controversial addition to the city of Jakarta after it was publicly revealed late 2009. The funders of the statue, mostly wealthy residents of the up-class Menteng area in central Jakarta, just wanted to express their happiness with the fact that the little boy Barry has become president Obama of the United States decades later. While others say he has done nothing for Indonesia and thus placing a statue of him in a public space is not appropriate.
As of February 2010, the statue is still located near one of the fountains of Taman Menteng. This city garden can be visited for free and 24 hours a day, all year around. The statue does not have it's own lighting, so if you want to make a picture of it, do it at daylight or bring good equipment with you. You will most likely not be the only one taking pictures, but the statue does not draw entire crowds either.
